7 Things

It finally happened, I was tagged by the super cool young Chicagoan Chelsea Winkle AKA @hirechelsea to post about seven things that are interesting or different about me. This is a MEME that has been circulating around the blogosphere for a few weeks now and now it seems my turn has come up to spill. Please know this is not a lame attempt at self promotion, but rather an opportunity to share some interesting factoids about myself with the people I connect with. It might even make for an interesting conversation starter for when we share a drink in person. Ahem...

1. I majored in sales in college (and sold newspaper advertising part time) but my job revolves around buying. This always tickles me because I ended up taking on a career that focuses on the exact opposite of what I was trained to do. I’m very grateful that I decided to force myself into sales early on in life because I grew up as a shy child and cold calling very quickly trains you to be less shy.

2. I am the first person in my family to be born in the United States. The rest, including my older brother came to Chicago in the late 70s from what was the called the Soviet Union. (Now Ukraine). I speak and understand Russian at about the same level as a 5 year old but cannot read or write. I don’t have much of a desire to go and visit the country of my roots, but perhaps someday I’ll change my mind. (I do like Vodka and Potatoes)

3. You will never meet another person with the same kind of obsession for ice cream as I have. I eat it almost everyday if I have some. And since the words ice, cream, buy, one, and get are generally synonymous in my vocabulary...I do usually have some. My favorite ice cream memory is eating Gelato twice a day during my visit to Italy.

4. I have been to Hawaii...for a half hour. When I was 5 my family decided to visit my cousins in Australia and back then the flights couldn’t always make it non-stop so I got to experience the beauty of Hawaii for a half hour inside an airport during the layover.

5. I was 24 years old the first time I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Yes, I’m serious. Perhaps it was the product of having immigrant parents, but things like PB&J, Little League Baseball, camping, and other typical childhood activities were things I kind got left out of. I’m playing catch up now, but that is fine with me.

6. I have the personality of an only child even though I have a brother. My one and only brother is 16 years older than me, so essentially I grew up in the house by myself. I don’t mind living alone or doing activities solo. I tend to try and be the center of attention. And I generally feel more mature than my age.

7. If there was such a thing as a speed beard growing contest, I would be a top contender. I started shaving at a very young age, and by the afternoons I usually will have a 3 o’clock shadow. Unfortunately my facial hair talents haven’t been mirrored on top of my head...but I digress.

So there’s your snippet of me. Hope you found it entertaining.

And now the obligatory rules:

Link your original tagger(s) and list these rules in your post.

  • Share seven facts about yourself in the post.
  • Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names and the links to their blogs. (I’m going to keep my tags to Chicagoans in order to boost our local connections)
  • Let them know they have been tagged

Yeah! I'm glad I got to learn 7 new things about you. I have a much younger sister who will most likely also feel like she is an only child. We are about 15 years apart.
